Top 10 most searched sports icons in India

Sports continued to be a top search item for readers in 2015. Indian ODI cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the most searched sporting personality on Yahoo.

#1. He may not be the captain of the Indian Test cricket team anymore, having handed over the mantle to Virat Kohli, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni continues to be the most searched sports personality in India.

#2. Virat Kohli, who has captained India in Test matches with great elan, is second on the list. His association with Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma too has added to his glamour quotient.

#3. At number 3 on the list is, slightly surprisingly, cricketer Suresh Raina. Raina was recently ‘bought’ in an IPL auction by the Rajkot team after Chennai Super Kings was suspended by BCCI earlier. He also got married in April this year.

#4. ‘The god of cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar was the 4^th most searched sports personality in India in 2015. His legion of fans ensured that the cricket great still rules the hearts and the minds of millions.

#5. Another surprise is Chris Gayle who is 5^th on the list ahead of many other cricket gods in India. The swashbuckling batsman is much loved for his pyrotechnics at the crease.

#6. Little wonder that the list is dominated by cricketers and in the 6^th spot is Yuvraj Singh whose recent performances in domestic cricket have been superb.

#7. Sania Mirza, who had a phenomenal 2015 after she paired with Swiss Miss Martina Hingis, has won probably everything there is to this year in the women’s doubles arena in world tennis. She was the 7^th most searched sports icon in India: no mean feat in a nation which loves its cricketers more than anyone else.

#8. A B de Villiers is perhaps the most loved overseas cricketer in India. His incredible batting style, his electrifying fielding and his terrific demeanour off the field has made him a heartthrob in the country. He comes is at no. 8 on this list.

#9. Standing 9^th of the list is former India cricket captain and now a part of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly. Outspoken and unafraid, he continues to command a lot of respect in the sport.

#10. Badminton ace Saina Nehwal is the only other woman on this list, apart from Sania Mirza, and also the only other non-cricketer. She was the tenth most searched sports personality in India in 2015.
